How to prepare yourself speaking to people (networking). What do you wear, what not to do. Help please

Toastmasters.

Find one in your area (they're there). Attend a meeting. Then join.

I agree with Dan. Toastmasters would both be helpful and probably be a lot of fun. Whatever you do, don't take Dale Carnagy. I quit after the class where they mandated that you make an ass of yourself in front of a bunch of people just to show you that everybody screws up in speaches. It was ridiculous.

Thirds on Toastmasters :-) I love it, now that I'm a member.

However, I started speaking professionally long before becoming a member. So in answer to your questions...For general networking, I wear professional but comfortable clothes, typically a suit or blazer and bottom combination. And the only real don't I can think of, off the top of my head, is don't go charging in...listen more than you speak and align what you say with what you hear. Look at building relationships not making a quick sale!
