Does anybody have an opinion on win 7 disk clone utility vs after market ones. CNET seemed to like Easeus Todo Backup at $39.

Is there any reason to exclude the obvious solution: CLONEZILLA (http://www.clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php) ?

That appears to be a Linux only solution. I might try that on my Linux machine the next time I upgrade it. However, my immediate need is for my wife's Win 7 machine. I also have a windows machine I'd like to have a clone backup for.

As a side question: When I did this in the past, I put data on one partition and the OS on another. That way data was not affected during a clone restoration. Are the virus's out there today likely to be getting into data files like excel or are they still pretty much in the OS files?

I like/use Acronis True Image. They have a free 30 day trial for you to use/try their software to ensure it fits your needs

Costs approximately $50, but then there are some coupon sites out there that may save you $10-$15

That appears to be a Linux only solution.

This is a fatal misunderstanding. Clonecilla is a "boot a CD even if everything else is broken"-solution, that happens to be based on Linux.
It handles all kinds of filesystems and - obviously - can be used to clone a Windows-only computer, giving you the reliability and performance you'd expect from a Linux solution.

Clonecilla is for everyone.
