I think everyone is in agreement. One thing I'd add is to remind yourself that you really liked the work. There's no reason why you can't be doing the same or similar kind of work again, even if you have to take another job for a time.

Jeez, really tough situation. As much as you like the work, unfortunately it's time to go. It's not even a matter of should you leave or shouldn't you, once he stopped paying you, it was over.
