Patent Application Experience

I finally came up with an idea that I think might be worth patenting. I've met with a patent attorney and we're paying a company to do a search to see if it has already been patented or not. If it has not, then I'll have to decide if it's worth going through the application process. Does anyone have experience doing this?

There is a possiblity that this idea could be very profitable - so it might be worth going through the process if it's not too painful and expensive.

I guess nobody else have had experience with this. FWIW - the search company found that my idea was already patented - it cost me $600 to have the search done.

I'll keep thinking of new ideas and, hopefully, will have something unique next time.
